Abstract
We present a method for computing the colored Jones polynomials of 2m-plats. In contrast to the standard approach, where one takes the quantum trace of a braid group representation obtained as a composition of R-matrices acting on tensor powers of a representation, we instead work with reduced-dimensional representations of braid groups adapted to plat closures. As an illustration, we explicitly compute the associated representation in the case of 4-plats.
